How to survive Holiday Eating
By Anne-Marie Blacker

Hi all,

PARTYING

It's that time of year again where the average North American person can gain an average of 5-10 lbs. over the holidays (eye roll!)

I hope the following tips may be useful for the rest of December.

The holidays are an exciting time for most people but the consequences of too much partying can take its toll, especially on the waist line. Some North Americans can gain anywhere from 5-10 lbs.; however, one can still enjoy the holidays and stay in the Zone with a little pre-planning.

Exercise is a great way to get through a holiday season and will help burn extra calories. I have even got up early Christmas morning to go for a power walk to give my metabolism a kick start.

Always eat a small Zone snack prior to going to a party!

At the party, try and stick with wine spritzers or vodka and soda and balance off each drink with protein.

Usually there are lots of hors de oeuvres at a party (ie grilled shrimp, chicken fingers, cheese, etc.).

When eating dinner at the party avoid the rolls, potatoes or any starchy food. I usually order Caesar salad, fish or chicken, double veggies (depending on the GI) and always finish off with dessert (my weakness). However I would rather have the dessert for my carbs while others may enjoy wine. It's all a matter of trading off.

All the running around at holiday time can affect one’s STRESS levels which in turn can affect our immune systems. Remember to take your pharmaceutical grade fish oil!

Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner can be quite a challenge!

Here are some tips to help on the actual day...

1. Start your day off with a Zone snack and some exercise.

2. After exercising eat a morning brunch that will give excellent hormonal for at least 5 hours. An example of a 3 block breakfast would be a 6-egg white omelette cooked in 2 tsp. olive oil followed with 1 cup slow cooking oatmeal.

3. If having an afternoon drink make sure it is balanced with protein.

4. When eating dinner use the eye ball method ie 1/3 plate white turkey breast (treat dark meat sparingly) and 2/3 plate carbohydrates. Fill most of your plate with low glycemic carbs ie green beans. A little mashed potatoes with gravy and dressing can be added for the unfavourables (no more than 25-33%). Avoid the rolls. Remember this is only your first round!

My downfall is usually all the heavily laden sweet treats after the Christmas meal. This is when I can totally blow my whole Zone meal and end up "pigging" out. The good thing about the Zone is that it is guilt-free. The next day I can get back on the Zone bandwagon and within a few days any weight gain from holiday eating usually comes off.

Re: How To Survive Holiday Eating (post by Graeme)

Hi Anne-Marie,

Great tips and I am sure most of our readers will totally agree yet ignore most of them on the day.

Here is how I see it.

We are encouraged to have ONE non zone meal a month. Xmas has to be one of those meals.

once you start eating (and drinking) the meal is started, but its not over till you stop. a 6 or 8 hour meal is perfectly ok.

the day after Xmas people following this advice will be very willing to listen to all your wonderful ideas and follow zone strictly till the next big occasion

Very Merry Xmas everybody. You enjoy your white Xmas While I enjoy my Amber one.

Taking Omega-3 every day could help children who have poor reading skills

  • Children whose reading skills were in the worst performing 20 per cent improved their reading age by three weeks.
  • Parents said their children had fewer behavioral problems when taking fish oil.

Children with poor reading skills could have their performance boosted by taking daily supplements of fatty acids found in seafood and some algae, according to new research.

Scientists at Oxford University gave 600mg omega-3 fatty acid pills to 362 children aged seven to nine daily for 16 weeks.

Although there was no significant effect in the overall study sample, they found those whose reading skills were in the lowest fifth of the normal range improved their reading age by three weeks more that a group taking a placebo.

And in the group of children whose initial reading skills were in the lowest 10 per cent their reading age was improved by 1.9 months.

The study was funded by DSM Nutritional Lipids which makes omega-3 supplements but carried out independently by Oxford University.

Dr Alex Richardson, a senior research fellow at the Centre for Evidence-Based Intervention at Oxford University, said: ‘Our results showed that taking daily supplements of omega-3 DHA improved reading performance for the poorest readers (those in the lowest fifth of the normal range) and helped these children to catch up with their peer group.’

Paul Montgomery, Professor of Psychosocial Intervention at the Centre for Evidence-Based Intervention at Oxford University, said: ‘Previous studies have shown benefits from dietary supplementation with omega-3 in children with conditions such as ADHD, Dyslexia and Developmental Coordination Disorder, but this is the first study to show such positive results in children from the general school population.’

However, while parents said their children had fewer behavioral problems, their teachers did not report similar improvements such as less hyperactivity and 'opposition-defiant behavior'.

And Michael Crawford at Imperial College London warned: 'People working with children, on the brain, expect the brain to be manipulated in a period of 16 weeks. It's a fundamental flaw.'

Omega-3 may help struggling children to read, says study

Children whose reading skills were in the lowest fifth of the normal range improved over the four months of the study

BY IAN SAMPLE / 6 September 2012

Children with the worst reading skills could improve their literacy with daily supplements of fatty acids found in fish, seafood and some algae, researchers claim.

Scientists gave a daily 600mg omega-3 fatty acid pill to children aged seven to nine and found that those whose reading skills were in the lowest fifth of the normal range improved over the four months of the study.

On average, the children in the bottom 20% for literacy boosted their reading age by three weeks more than a control group taking a daily placebo. Those in the lowest 10% for literacy improved their reading age by 1.9 months compared with the placebo group.

The idea that omega-3 supplements can improve brain function in some children is controversial, and the latest study, from researchers at Oxford University, has already drawn criticism. The study was funded by a company called DSM Nutritional Lipids, which makes omega-3 supplements, though the study was performed at Oxford independently.

One contentious point is that the study, involving 74 Oxfordshire schools, looked at reading and behavioral problems in 362 children who were in the lowest third for literacy skills. Analysis on this group of children found no improvements in reading or working memory, and while parents said their children had fewer behavioral problems, their teachers reported no change on these scores.

The positive effects of the pills were seen only in a subgroup of the worst-performing 224 children and for reading only. Again, teachers recorded none of the improved behavior parents saw, such as less hyperactivity and "so-called opposition-defiant behavior".

Alex Richardson, who led the study at Oxford's Centre for Evidence-Based Intervention, said the original trial had been designed to look at children in the poorest 20% for reading skills, but children in the bottom third were added to get the right number of participants for the study.

Despite the study's shortcomings, Richardson said the potential improvement in the poorest readers warranted follow-up work to confirm or rule out the effect.

"This is not going to help any child who isn't lacking in these nutrients," she said. "But to bring up the tail-end, that is something that theoretically makes sense. This is such an important group of children in terms of their life chances, and you have to catch them early. It's a cumulative thing.

"Kids who can't read are effectively going to miss out on the rest of their schooling, because if you can't read it is very difficult to access the rest of the curriculum."

Omega-3 fatty acids, such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), appear to play a crucial role in brain development by supporting the growth of neurons and their connections to one another. The substance is found naturally in fish oils and some algae, but may be lacking in some people's diets.

However, Michael Crawford, who studied DHA and brain development at Imperial College London, said the substance was vital for healthy brain development of children in the womb.

"Once they are born, the basic architecture of their brain is already defined. You're not going to make an Einstein out of somebody who doesn't have the potential at birth," he said.

But he felt the results warranted further investigation. "You're bound to get a gradation in ability. Some children will be at the top and some at the bottom. The ones at the top you're not going to influence very much, if at all, but the ones at the bottom, the fact that you can make a difference to them is important. It shows there is a potential to help those who are least able."

Crawford said much longer term studies were needed to confirm the extent of any effect of omega-3 on children's brains at school age.

"The problem with all of these studies is that they're really addressing a formed brain, and so they are far too short and underpowered by comparison with any of the sorts of trials we do in clinical medicine. For some reason, the people working with children, on the brain, expect the brain to be manipulated in a period of 16 weeks. It's a fundamental flaw."

Details of the study are published in the journal PloS One.

• This article was amended on 7 September 2012. The original said omega-3 fatty acids are known also as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). This has been corrected to say omega-3 fatty acids, such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
