Do you know what your AA:EPA Ratio is???

Knowing and actively managing your levels of Omega-3 fatty acid can have a direct impact on your risk for coronary heart disease.

According to the clinical literature, increased Omega-3 fatty acid levels in the blood have been proven to positively impact cardiovascular disease and control inflammation. Specifically, clinical work has shown that reaching certain levels greatly reduces the risk of developing heart disease by 32%, reduces death from a heart attack by 70%, and manages silent inflammation, a precursor for many illnesses and diseases.

Your single blood test will provide four measurements.

• The first measurement, called the “AA: EPA Ratio” reflects the level of silent inflammation. An AA: EPA Ratio of 1.5 - 3:0 is desirable. Ref: Yamada T, Athero 153: 469-481 (2000).

• The second measurement, called the “Omega -3 Score” indicates the summed levels of total omega-3. An Omega-3 Score of 7.2 or greater is desirable. Ref: Determined from Simon et al., Am. J. Epidemiol., 42:469 (1995).

• The third measurement, called the "DHA Score" indicates the levels of DHA. A DHA Score of 4.5 or greater is desirable. If your 'Omega-3 Score' is 7.2 or greater, and your 'DHA Score' is 4.5 or greater, the coronary heart disease risk reduction is 32%. Ref: Determined from Simon et al., Am. J. Epidemiol., 42:469 (1995).

• The fourth measurement, called the “EPA + DHA" Score indicates the levels of combined EPA and DHA. If your EPA + DHA Score is 4.6 or great, then the risk of death from heart attack is reduced by 70%. Ref: Based on Lemaitre et al., Am. J. Clin. Nutr., 77:319 (2003).

Schizophrenia.

It is a serious disorder of the mind and brain but it is also highly treatable. Although there is no cure for schizophrenia, the treatment success rate with antipsychotic medications and psycho-social therapies can be high. If the appropriate level of investment is made in research, it has been estimated that a cure for schizophrenia could be found within by the year 2013.

Traditionally, however, schizophrenia has only received a small fraction of the amount of medical research dollars that go into other serious diseases and disorders.

Schizophrenia occurs in all societies regardless of class, color, religion, and culture - however there are some variations in terms of incidence and outcomes for different groups of people.

The earlier that schizophrenia is diagnosed and treated, the better the outcome of the person and the better the recovery. Schizophrenia itself ranks among the top 10 causes of disability in developed countries worldwide.

The prevalence rate for schizophrenia is approximately 1.1% of the population over the age of 18 or, in other words, at any one time as many as 51 million people worldwide suffer from schizophrenia, including;

• 6 to 12 million people in China (a rough estimate based on the population)
• 4.3 to 8.7 million people in India (a rough estimate based on the population)
• 2.2 million people in USA
• 285,000 people in Australia
• Over 280,000 people in Canada
• Over 250,000 diagnosed cases in Britain

Rates of schizophrenia are generally similar from country to country—about .5% to 1 percent of the population (there are variations - but the variance is difficult to track due to differing measuring standards in many countries, etc.). Another way to express the prevalence of schizophrenia at any give time is the number of individuals affected per 1,000 total population. In the United States that figure is 7.2 per 1,000. This means that a city of 3 million people will have over 21,000 individuals suffering from schizophrenia.

Fish oil hope for schizophrenia patients

A new study suggests that fish oil could be the key to a safe and effective form of treatment for young people with schizophrenia.

For young people at risk of developing the mental illness, early treatment is generally seen as the best way to avoid full-blown psychosis down the track.

Adolescent psychiatrist Paul Amminger of the University of Melbourne's Orygen Youth Health Centre says low doses of anti-psychotic drugs are sometimes prescribed, but it is controversial.

"Because of the side effects and because only part of those people progress to a full threshold disorder, we should also question if in such an early stage an intervention should be provided and, in particular, intervention with anti-psychotic medication," he said.

Professor Amminger led a Vienna-based study which has been published in the Archives of General Psychiatry.

It looked at whether regular doses of fish oil could stave off schizophrenia in people with a high risk of developing the disorder.

He says it is well-established that people with schizophrenia have lower levels of omega-3 or polyunsaturated fatty acids.

"We also know from etiological evidence that in countries like Norway or Iceland or Japan, the prevalence for instance for bipolar disorder is significantly lower," he said.

Seventy-six people completed the study and of the group, 41 were given fish oil tablets four times a day for three months. The rest were given a placebo.

Of the group that took the fish oil capsules, only two had developed a psychotic disorder after a year, while of the placebo group, 11 went on to develop some kind of psychosis.

Professor Amminger says while there have been previous studies examining the links between fatty acids and mental health, this study showed the most conclusive results.

"The dose which we are providing through fish oil capsules, it is not a huge dose," he said.
Dr Phil Brock, the director of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Women and Children's Hospital in Adelaide, says it is becoming increasingly clear how important fish oil is to the development of brain cells.

He says in a recent South Australian study, omega-3 substances were given to breastfeeding women with premature babies.

"Those premature babies that received the omega-3 in the breast milk did show advanced improvement in neurological development compared to the prem infants that didn't receive the omega-3s," he said.

But he thinks it is too early to say whether fish oil could be prescribed for a range of mental illnesses.

"It could become routine but certainly they are being looked at in a lot of conditions," he said.

"At the other end of the spectrum, we are getting some early evidence that people that take omega-3 fish oil substances might be at a lesser risk of developing dementia in the later years.
"So they are obviously useful in many, many areas of disease and hopefully that can help us with problems in psychiatric disorders."
